European Competency SIG

The European Competency SIG was established after a successful workshop organized by CEN WS/LT, ICOPER and a number of other projects during the conference ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2008 in Berlin (link to workshop). The SIG aims to promote a common European understanding and practice regarding competencies in relation to schools, academic, life long and professional learning. The SIG will organize its third annual workshop sponsored by ICOPER in Berlin in December this year (link to workshop).

Objective and Activities of the SIG

The main objective of the SIG is to promote a common European understanding and practice regarding competencies in schools, academic, lifelong and professional learning.

This will be accomplished by:

  • Providing an overview of outcomes of key projects in this area to know who is dealing with what issues related to competencies (competency map in the area).
  • Bringing in user requirements identified by the different research projects, the business world, national groups and by individual experts.
  • Developing a common understanding of the different competency models developed in the area using modelling and semantic technologies to link and to compare them.
  • Attaching use cases, scenarios, good practices, failures, etc.
  • Creating an alert system on trends, emerging topics and concepts and showing at the same time the evolution of such concepts.
  • Providing recommendations for harmonization.
